The Roofing Pyramid No One Talks About

How Subcontracting Abuse, Vanishing Contractors & Greedy Bidding Are Hurting Homeowners

If you’ve recently had a roof installed or are thinking about getting one, this is a post you’ll want to read all the way through.

The truth is: the roofing industry has become a quiet pyramid scheme, and it’s homeowners, small businesses, and even the reputation of honest contractors that are paying the price.

How the Pyramid Scheme Works

What used to be a direct relationship between roofer and homeowner has turned into a stacked hierarchy of middlemen.

A contractor wins the bid.

That contractor subs out the job to a crew.

That crew might be working under another company entirely.

And that same contractor? They may be a sub themselves, working under a larger outfit.

This cycle repeats and at every level, someone is slicing off a margin. By the time the crew shows up to do your roof, there’s barely any budget left. Corners get cut. Materials get swapped. And quality suffers.

Why We’re Speaking Out

At All Levels Roofing LLC, we’re not writing this to stir the pot, we’re writing it because we’ve lived it.

We’ve been subbed out. We’ve had homeowners call us directly not knowing we weren’t the ones they hired just to say, “There’s a problem with our new roof.” Then we find out that three or more different crews were on that job. No consistency, no accountability, and now the homeowner is left with the mess.

We’ve seen general contractors hire a roofing company, who then sub it out to another, and that company subs it out again. Repairs are done by crews who weren’t there from the start and have no knowledge of what was installed. It's chaos.

The Real Scam: Vanishing Contractors

Even worse, some contractors are now selling their contracts because they can’t follow through with the work. Once the roof is "done," they disappear.

Homeowners are left paying out of pocket for repairs on a brand new roof. Even with insurance involved, unless you're ready to go to court, you’re likely just going to eat the cost. And for most families, it’s not worth the legal headache.

The Bidding War That’s Killing the Industry

Roofing should be about doing right by people setting a fair price, using quality labor, and standing behind your work. But too many companies are undercutting bids by using cheap labor and playing the subcontracting game.

Some don’t even hold licenses or insurance. That’s a dangerous conversation we’ll save for another post but it’s part of the same broken system.

How You Can Protect Yourself

Ask who will actually be doing the work not just whose name is on the estimate.

Demand that your contractor is licensed, insured, and present.

Work with companies that are transparent and involved not just passing paper to someone else.

If you're unsure about a recent roof install, get a second opinion before problems escalate.

Why We’re Different

At All Levels Roofing LLC, we’re a family-owned company, present at every job, and committed to quality over quantity. We don’t pass your home off to strangers. We stay onsite, communicate with you directly, and take pride in every single roof we touch.

Let’s Be Honest, Utah. We Need Better Roofers.

This is just the start of a conversation we all need to have. Roofing is too important to leave in the hands of companies more focused on margins than workmanship.

If you're a homeowner, contractor, or property manager and you’ve experienced this you’re not alone. And we’re here to help change the way roofing gets done.
